The Authoring menu is part of the Main window

Authoring | Help Express

Use this window for quick and easy Help file creation. Pick a folder containing HTML files and click Create Help. Compresses the local web contents of the folder and its subfolders to a single Help file (HTML Help 1.x or MS Help 2.0).

Authoring | Help Wizard

Yet another way to create MS help (MS HTML Help 1.x or MS Help 2.x). This window exposes you to more help settings but does so step by step over several byte size pages.  Select a help system > choose a project file > Select content files >  build a TOC > build an Index > compile to help.

Authoring | TOC/Index Editor

Opens the FAR WYSIWYG Table Of Contents & Index Editor.  Here you can edit both HTML Help .hhc (TOC) and .hhk (Index) files, and MS Help 2.x .HxT and .HxK files.

Tip: You can right-click either a TOC or Index file in Windows Explorer and select "Open with FAR".

Create a portable JavaScript based search engine for loose HTML files. First add your web site's HTML files to the FAR file list.

Authoring | HTML Help Project Editor

This advanced .hhp project file editor allows you to fine tune you help projects. The editor contains several setting that fix MS Workshop bugs. Also some extra settings supported by HH Compiler but not found in MS Workshop.

Authoring | HTML Help Utilities

This window is a tool for examining Chm files

  1. Lists the contents of a CHM or HxS file.
  2. Extract and delete files from a Chm or HxS.
  3. Compare the contents of two Chms or HxS.
  4. Examine and Test Help mappings of a CHM (Context Ids).
  5. Compress dead space from Chm and Chw files.
  6. Create ITS files (by deleting all HTML Help binary files).
  7. Test all hyper-links in a Chm, including bookmarks and cross Chm links.

Authoring | H2 Collection Wizard

Once you have create your help titles (.HxS help files) use this wizard to setup your collection-level files. The wizard takes all the pain out of configuring and registering your collection.

Authoring | Tag Editor

Allows you to edit help and meta tags. See Tag Editor dialog.


Authoring | Batch Decompile

Drop several help files (.CHM, .HxS etc) into the FAR file list then select Batch Decompile.
FAR will prompt you for an output folder then extract the contents of all help files to the output folder.

FAR extracts everything from a help file including the #* and $* files, which are binary files created by the help compiler. eg. Search and Index data files. These can be ignored and have no meaning to most authors. To inhibit the extraction of MS Binaries set DecompileMSBins = N in the Settings.ini file before starting FAR.

Authoring | Batch Compile

Compile a batch of MS Help projects with the single button click. All compiler output is directed to a single log file.
